What is a web hosting?

In order for your website to be visible online, you need to rent space on a server, a so-called web hosting. You can compare it with a real hotel, where you pay to rent a room.

There are many web hosts to choose from and most are reliable and solid, but there are of course exceptions to the rule here as with so much else.

If you choose a system that Webflow, Wix or Spotify, they have CMS and web hosting in the same package, so you don't need any external web hosting.

However, an external web host is necessary if you want one WordPress website.

If you already have a web host, I always check it out before I start your website. I check how clear the user panel is, that you find what you need quickly, and also whether they offer cPanel.

What is -cPanel?

Cpanel is a web-based control panel software that allows you to manage your account. It is simple and clear. With cPanel, you can easily manage email accounts, domains, databases, file management and much more.

The main reason why I would like your web host to offer cPanel is that there you have the ability to create a staging website.

A staging website is a temporary website/URL where one can create the new website without having to publish the website with the domain before it is finished. cPanel also gives you the ability to update WordPress plugins safely without affecting the website after it is published. Then you can either use the staging webpage as a backup and update the web page itself, or you can update the plugins first on the staging webpage to see if everything runs smoothly, and then update the web page itself.

When something goes wrong

Sometimes things can go wrong, e.g. when a plugin no longer works with the other plugins used. Then, in the worst case scenario, you can get banned and not get logged in with the website's regular WordPress login. Then, via cPanel, you can disable all the plugins and log in to the website from there, and then test out which plugins were the cause.

Via cPanel you also have control over other functions such as DNS, email, databases, PHP version, SSL certificate, etc.

If you have a web host, I always check it out, and if I think it is most appropriate to move to another web host that has cPanel, I recommend it.

If you don't already have a web host, you don't have to arrange to find one yourself. I can do it for you and then choose one that I have good experience with.

During the process of building your website, you are then given a temporary URL (ex: annec.webflow.io) so that you can keep up with the development of your website. When the website is finished, I will publish it for you, and point or move your domain to the web host's server. Your website will then get the correct domain name (e.g. www.annec.no)
