What you should know about a domain

To have a website up and go on the internet, it must have a domain name. You can think of a domain as the address of your website, similar to the fact that the house you live in has its address. All websites have their own unique address, also called IP address. An IP address is written with numbers like this: 158.26.478.25, but since we are better at remembering names than numbers, we use domain names instead, such as http://www.annec.no.

A domain name can have a maximum of 63 characters, and a minimum of 1 character, but to make it easy to remember, it pays to find a short and precise domain name.

You can use the letters a - z and the numbers 0-9, as well as hyphens. The use of special characters can vary from country to, and for .no domains special characters are now allowed such as Å, Ø and Å .

If you buy a .com domain, you should avoid Æ, Ø and Å, as this can lead to conflicts.

It is also common not to use capital letters, and upper and lower case letters are treated equally.
